IPv4 vs. IPv6 ??

Good afternoon.
I've read in a few places and recommended to by a few people the same way to disable IPv6 under network settings, and just leave IPv4 checked/on. Can anyone explain the differences and why I should do this is plain terms? Relative newb here, but with great enthusiasm for what Linux is doubtlessly eventually capable of--hoping to help convince others to make the switch the same way.
