You can still water your garden with a watering can, but that's about it as the city of Hamilton has banned all non-essential outdoor water use until July 13.

The ban, which came into effect Saturday morning, means residents throughout the city can't water lawns, use sprinklers, fill large pools or wash cars.

The city had announced voluntary restrictions on those water uses on Friday but quickly upgraded to a mandatory ban.

Residents wishing to can still hand-water their flowers and vegetable gardens, or water newly installed sod as needed," said city spokesperson Jasmine Graham in a press release.

The ban comes as a precaution to protect the water supply in the city as the Woodward Water Treatment Plant is under construction and limited to how much water it can treat.

The mandatory ban is in place to prevent low or no water pressure, or not enough water for fighting fires," Graham explained.

The city will be reducing its own irrigation activities where possible.

Fret not though, municipal spray pads will remain open to help you beat the heat.
