Can't get desktop launcher working, Mint 19.3 xfce-32bit

I can't create or copy (from LM 18) a working Firefox desktop launcher (mozilla vers.) in LM-xfce 19.3, 32bit.
I've used LM 18 versions for yrs- extracting the tar file in Downloads, then copying "Firefox" folder to /opt. The 1st time I installed it, it took a couple of min. to have a launcher (in Cinnamon DE). In LM 18, I uninstalled Mint's firefox - didn't phase the copy in /opt.
Mint 19.3 xfce, firefox in /opt I can't get a launcher to work, no matter what.
Not by creating symlinks; I made sure the link was made per the articles.
Not by using same data in launchers, that still work in LM 18.
It did NOT seem to like it when I uninstalled mint-Fx via synaptic, so I reinstalled it.
Didn't help. I've tried a lot of things, following articles. I can get Mint's version in /usr/bin + /usr/lib, to launch. There's one "firefox" file - that is a link to a firefox.sh file in /usr/lib, where all other LM firefox files are.
All articles / tuts on installing from tar file (to /opt), say to use /usr/bin as the target for the link:
Code:$ sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefoxI'm not sure why, after they all say rename the /usr/bin/firefox (that's a link to /usr/lib) to "firefox-old". Then create a new firefox link that shows in /usr/bin, that points to /opt/firefox. Is that correct?
There are many articles / tuts on installing mozilla's Fx tar file in LM 19.x - all say the same. Most I've seen mentioning LM 19(or even 19.3), use the symlink method, if using tar files. [symlinks weren't necessary in LM 18]. It's very easy to follow - it just doesn't work in LM 19.3 xfce (on 32 bit).
I looked at old .desktop files (Fx desktop in LM 18) and other apps' desktop files in LM 19. I used same data (that's working for Fx desktop files & launchers in LM 18) on new launchers & creating a desktop file, but no-go in LM 19.
If someone has the scoop, it'll have to be something beside the standard, basic steps you can read anywhere. I've already done that many ways, many times & so much more. Some things changed in LM 19 - they may be causing my issue.
I checked the profiles.ini - it looked fine. In LM 18, it takes 2 - 3 min to GPG verify, extract & copy new Fx to /opt & be running. So far in LM 19.3, it's a huge headache. Thanks. (time for more meds)
