Haudenosaunee protesters occupy Caledonia development
Protesters flew Haudenosaunee and Mohawk flags on an excavator at the McKenzie Meadows in Caledonia as they dispute a land claim.
Protesters arrived Sunday, July 19 at the McKenzie Meadows Caledonia housing development and have occupied it since - though there seems to be some confusion about the reasons behind the action.
At the end of the next day, nearly a dozen trucks, two tents and an increasing number of people inhabited the site that was under construction. Haudenosaunee and Mohawk flags flew over an abandoned excavator that was decorated with a sign LANDBACK."
Protesters at the Caledonia housing development would not comment, saying they would wait for others before commenting.
The land is as part of a disputed land claim that also involved Douglas Creek Estates in 2006.
Land activist Eve Saint posted Facebook coverage, initially confused on what was being protested. We're here because some development is happening on their lands that uh.." Saint trailed off. I understand it's part of Caledonia," she said and went to find someone who knew more about the protest, commenting that OPP had arrived.
The development, barely more than a dirt pile with construction vehicles, is on disputed land, the same that involved Douglas Creek Estates in 2006.
It's just trying to get everyone together, you know, no division or nothing here," said an unnamed man in the video. It's just the people of Six Nations, you know, setting a reminder of something that gets pushed aside constantly - development on the Haldimand tract."
