Second teen charged in deadly Hamilton Mountain parking lot ambush
A second 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in the murder of Ali Mohummad, who was stabbed when he and a group of young men were ambushed in a Limeridge Road West parking lot early Sunday.
The first 17-year-old from Hamilton was arrested Monday. The second was arrested at his Mount Hope residence around 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.
Both are charged with second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He is expected to briefly appear in court by video Wednesday.
Neither teen can be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The 19-year-old victim, who was known as Ali Moe, was one of a group of about 10 young men from Peel Region who had planned to meet a group from Hamilton in the parking lot of a plaza at 310 Limeridge Rd. W., east of Garth Street, around 1 a.m. July 19.
There was a minor dispute between two of the young men and the Peel group thought they were going to talk. Instead, Hamilton police say, they were ambushed by a group of 20 to 30 from Hamilton.
The 19-year-old victim wasn't directly tied to the dispute, but was with the group.
Mohummad's brother Hamza Chaudry said he was also stabbed in the attack, but has been released from hospital. The 22-year-old said his brother's murder was a wrong place, wrong time, wrong person type of situation."
The brothers were close, Chaudry said, adding that he wouldn't leave home without his younger brother.
A GoFundMe account to support the family has already raised more than $26,000.
The loud melee, which included knives, rocks, a Taser and vehicles that were overtaken and driven at the Peel Region men, was captured in part on video shared on social media.
Det. Sgt. Peter Thom said homicide investigators believe the video captures Mohummad being chased through the parking lot into the parking lot of 11 Kendale Crt., an apartment building directly south of the large Limeridge parking lot.
When emergency services first responded to the attack they found three injured young men - including two who had been stabbed - and they were transported to hospital.
In the large and dark scene, it was difficult to spot Mohummad whose body was found down a hill and next to a fence, with a bush on the other side in the back corner of the Kendale Court parking lot.
It was only once the group arrived in hospital that they realized the 19-year-old was missing and police were called back to the scene. Officers found blood trails, but not the victim, Thom said.
Officers called in the canine unit who tracked one of the blood trails in the apartment parking lot to Mohummad's body. He had been stabbed more than once and Thom said with his level of injury he likely died quickly.
Police believe the apartment parking lot blood likely belongs to Mohummad, but are awaiting forensics.
It's not clear if he was stabbed in the parking lot and stumbled to where his body was found, or if he was stabbed, chased further and then stabbed again.
No murder weapon has been seized and it's not clear if more than one knife was used.
Hamilton police are encouraging anyone who was there but did not participate to call police. Anyone who participated in the assault should contact a lawyer and turn themselves in, police say.
Thom said police are confident they will identify more people.
Anyone with information who has not spoken with police is asked to call Det. Daryl Reid of the major crime unit at 905-546-3825
