System crashing problem solved -- Ryzen 5 3600
by tjf6508 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5664C)
I have been using Linux in various forms for about a year. Mostly Mint/Cinnamon, but I've tested other variants (Zorin, MXLinux, etc.).
Was using a Ryzen 5 3600 om MSI B450M Pro M2 wit 16gb ram.
I have been seeing system crashes since the first date of install, usually in Youtube videos but occasionally in other places. I tried everything to track down the source, have changed kernels u0p and down rev, every browser I could get, every distro I could find.
Keeping in mind Windows 10 on the same hardware works perfectly, never a crash or glitch in a year. So it had to be some software somewhere, right?
Exasperated I tried changing out the ram, that did nothing. Then I replaced the R5 3600 CPU with the newest Ryzen 3 3100.
Voila, problem is gone. Completely reliable. Youtube videos running overnight (that had never happened).
So does anybody have any insight as to why the R5 3600 fails where a R3 3100 (and several other CPUs in other machines) work fine?
This machine is used mostly for browsing, file storage, light games, etc., nothing rigorous and no mods, always kept up to date.
