Super slow hdd transfer speeds

I have a Western Digital 3TB Elements external hard drive. Usb 3.0 plugged into a 3.0 port. Trying to transfer 200gb of data for last 7 hours and it's only transferred 90 gigs so far so rough estimate that's like 3.5 mb/s which seems extremely slow considering people benchmark the drive at 100mb/s. if i could get a quarter of that i would be happy.

- the files are not a million tiny files, they are mostly video files.
- i formatted the drive before starting the transfer, to ext4 from exfat.
- im reading from my nvme sabrent rocket and writing to the WD.
- the nvme drive is at 90% capacity at the moment, the WD is 0%.
- the speeds to bounce around from 1 mib/s to 10.5 mib/s but 80% of the time it's around 1-2 mib/s and over the last 7 hours only transferring 90 gigs, the average transfer speed is terrible at around 3 mibs
- maybe i messed up something when i formatted in gparted? i just wiped the entire drive, and formatted to ext4. i had deleted 1 mb of random/unallocated space, i also deleted 200 mb of efi partition. after formatting the drive, it showed it was 2.5 tb out of the advertised 3.0 and gparted showed it took the 5% at 46gb for memory stuff.

did some googling, discovered hdparm to benchmark it. tried to run

Code:hdparm -t /dev/sdbbut it just freezes the terminal. after 5 minutes i eventually ctrl c to no avail and have to just X out.

i made sure to pause the transfer before starting the benchmark but the hdparm test still fails.

what are some things i can check/look into?
