Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams is opting out of the 2020 NFL season, the team announced Wednesday.

"As an organization, we certainly understand and respect Damien's choice, knowing it was made in the best interest of his family," Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement. "He means a lot to our football team as a player and a person, and we're going to miss having him around this season."

Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif recently became the first NFL player to opt out of the upcoming campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Williams rushed for 104 yards on 17 carries in Kansas City's 31-20 victory in Super Bowl LIV.

The 28-year-old ran for a career-high 498 yards and added 213 yards on 30 receptions across 11 regular-season appearances in 2019.

Kansas City selected running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
