Setting up ACPI Volume Controls

Hello, I have successfully built an LFS system, and I have customized it very much via BLFS. However, I am having trouble getting the ACPI volume buttons on my laptop's keyboard to work.

What I have done so far:
  • installed the acpid package - done
  • installed alsa-lib and alsa-utils - done
  • installed pulseaudio - done
  • configured the ACPI screen brighness buttons - done
  • get sound to work (i.e., actually play sounds) - done
What I am unsure of
  • compiled the kernel with support for my keyboard - not sure if done properly
  • configured volume buttons - not working
I have tried getting the volume buttons to work, but to no avail.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop.
