Newbie wanting to switch to Linux

Hello all! Newbie, know almost nothing about Linux, but want to escape the Apple sandbox. I have a Macbook Pro, and just beginning to shop for a replacement laptop with Linux and looking hard at the Purism 14 laptop. Privacy is a big issue for me, as in escaping all the tracking/spying, etc., but if there are are better options, I'd love to hear about them, because as I said, I'm new and just trying to learn all I can before I buy anything.
