Panthers' Okung refutes retirement report: 'I always expected to play'

Carolina Panthers left tackle Russell Okung quashed a report that claimed he was considering retirement, according to ESPN's David Newton.

It was reported on Aug. 7 that Okung was contemplating calling it quits amid fears over the COVID-19 pandemic. The veteran offensive tackle was also said to have seriously considered opting out of the upcoming season.

The two-time Pro Bowler insisted on Tuesday that the report was inaccurate.

"I always expected to play," Okung said. "It's unfortunate that so many people, certain people in the media, are more interested in being the first to report as opposed to reporting something that is accurate. No conversations like that have been had in order for that individual to feel it's necessary to put any information out there like that.

"Especially in this time, with so many people dealing with unemployment, to put any sort of farce information out there, it's extremely disappointing."

The 31-year-old missed 10 games last year with a pulmonary embolism due to blood clots. The Panthers acquired Okung from the Los Angeles Chargers in March in exchange for guard Trai Turner.

Okung has also played for the Seattle Seahawks (2010-15) and Denver Broncos (2016) since being selected sixth overall out of Oklahoma State in 2010.
