New England Patriots running back Sony Michel returned to training camp for the first time since undergoing foot surgery in May, according to NBCS Boston's Phil Perry.

Michel was taken off the physically unable to perform list and was at practice on Wednesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

The ball carrier, who led the Patriots in rushing yards in each of the last two seasons, has dealt with various injuries throughout his short career. In addition to battling a knee issue last season, he went under the knife earlier this year to relieve discomfort in his foot.

Michel's play declined in 2019 after impressing during his rookie campaign. The former first-round pick averaged just 3.7 yards per carry, despite scoring seven touchdowns, and rushed for less than 50 yards in seven of his 16 games played.

The 25-year-old should still enter the upcoming campaign as New England's No. 1 running back, though the team recently signed Lamar Miller for depth. Miller is coming off a torn ACL but could carve out a role if healthy.

The crowded Patriots depth chart also features Rex Burkhead, Damien Harris, and primary pass-catching back James White.
