Root partition filling up during updates

55 Gb root partition

Three times lately this system's root has been filled up while doing updates - maybe 4 Gb left. Kernel update included every time.
bin, sbin, lib and a couple of others suddenly have 4 to 6 thousand items in them.
Any thoughts where I start looking for this one?
