Switch User Function freezes system

Greetings:
I'm having a problem with the "switch user" function in Linux Mint 19.1 on a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop. After switching and returning to the original user, after a few minutes the system freezes to the point where my only option is to do a hard shutdown. I tried searching the forums here but the search timed-out. I searched the web but was only able to find discussions that were 3+ years old and those offered no solutions. Apparently this is/was not an uncommon problem and may be related to the graphics card. My card is an Intel Haswell-ULT.
Any advice/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
