Up to 60 millimetres of rain could pour over Hamilton to close out the last weekend of August, Environment Canada forecasts.

The national weather service is calling for thunderstorms with at least 30 millimetres of rain Friday afternoon and into Saturday morning.

The special weather statement came hours after Ontario was pummeled by thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon.

No tornado, but storm batters Haldimand-Norfolk

Residents of Haldimand-Norfolk shouldn't put away their umbrellas either, as heavy rain is expected to usher in the weekend from Delhi to Dunnville and along the Lake Erie shoreline.

A tornado warning issued for the area Thursday afternoon came to naught, but high winds and thunderstorms did heavy damage to trees and property in Norfolk's west end, downing hydro lines, scattering tree limbs on roadways, and knocking out power to several thousand homes.

Power was mostly restored by Friday, with some pockets of the county still in the dark.
