Los Angeles Chargers superstar safety Derwin James is likely to miss significant time due to a meniscus injury suffered during practice Sunday, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

James reportedly requires further evaluation. The 24-year-old's treatment options are a meniscus trim, which would have a four-week recovery timeline, or a full repair, which could mean several months on the sideline, Rapoport notes.

Injuries also hampered James' 2019 campaign, as a stress fracture in his foot limited him to five games.

The Chargers drafted James 17th overall in 2018 out of Florida State. He immediately staked his claim as one of the best young defenders in the league, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors as a rookie.

Los Angeles will open its 2020 campaign with a Week 1 matchup versus the Cincinnati Bengals.
