Report: Fournette files grievance against Jaguars over base salary

Running back Leonard Fournette filed a grievance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, seeking to recoup the $4.17-million base salary his former team voided after waiving him Monday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Fournette had the fifth-year option on his rookie deal declined in May and was entering a contract season in 2020. He could have made $8.64 million this year, including the base salary and another $4.47 million in bonus, according to Spotrac.

The 2017 fourth overall pick inked a four-year contract worth up to $27.1 million coming out of LSU.

It is not the first time Jacksonville has voided part of Fournette's contract - the team also dropped his contract's remaining guarantees after he received a one-game suspension for an in-game fight in November 2018.

The Jaguars parted ways with Fournette a month into training camp and less than two weeks before their season opener. He thanked the franchise and its fans on Twitter hours later.

Fournette topped 1,000 rushing yards in two of his three NFL campaigns but overall has failed to match the high expectations that followed his decorated college football career. He averaged 4 yards per carry and scored 19 total touchdowns through 36 games with the Jaguars.

The 25-year-old officially became a free agent Tuesday after going unclaimed on waivers, a source told Schefter.
