The Chicago Bears expect to declare Mitchell Trubisky as the team's starting quarterback entering the 2020 season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Chicago acquired veteran Nick Foles via trade this offseason - who made the battle competitive - but the Bears have been impressed with Trubisky's leadership and performance entering his fourth season, Schefter adds.

Trubisky led the Bears to a 12-4 record and their first playoff appearance in eight years in 2018, but he struggled last season in a year where Chicago finished 8-8 and outside the postseason. It led the club to decline his fifth-year option and trade a fourth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Foles.

In a contract year, Trubisky will open the campaign under center against the Detroit Lions in Week 1.

He'll have a respected voice and former Super Bowl MVP as his immediate backup. Foles has also proven capable of taking the reins and getting results late in the season.
