Extra /usr

My root parition filled up, on a Debian Buster machine. After wading through ~5MB of text output from du, I realized that I had a /usr/usr directory containing 7.6GB. Diff showed that /usr and /usr/usr had the same subdirectories. I deleted the /usr/usr subdirectory, and so far so good. Does anyone know how this happened? I've never seen it, I'm baffled.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=4IHLp8MvwxA:GnoHSgF5upQ:F7zBnMy latest?i=4IHLp8MvwxA:GnoHSgF5upQ:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=4IHLp8MvwxA:GnoHSgF5upQ:gIN9vFw4IHLp8MvwxA
