edit fstab to mount nonempty volume

I have a vortexbox (media server) on Fedora 23. I recently setup a new hard drive formatted as exfat to use as the USB storage. It has media files in it.
These are the instructions for setup:
https://wiki.vortexbox.org/how_to_us...ve_for_storage

When I try to mount the USB drive as storage it says the mount point is nonempty. (not exactly sure what "nonempty" means. The drive has data on it. Is that what this means?)

I was able to mount the drive using the -o nonempty option and everything works. I edited fstab to get the drive to mount on startup. (I edited as per the instructions above)

My issue is: 1. when I restart the computer it hangs on the boot logo (Zotac). If I restart the computer with the drive unplugged I can get to the fedora 23 screen and when I plug them in the start up shows that /storage (the mountpoint) is nonempty and the start up fails.

Is there a way to make the mount point empty? Or is there a way to make edit fstab where the drive will mount even if nonempty? Why would the drive hang on the boot logo (I checked to make sure the boot order didn't try to boot off of the drive and it doesn't).

this is my hardware:

I've had my vortexbox for 8 years but I've only done minor tinkering so I guess I consider myself a newbie.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=fgNiqUXBlfA:FqO-wUQk52o:F7zBnMy latest?i=fgNiqUXBlfA:FqO-wUQk52o:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=fgNiqUXBlfA:FqO-wUQk52o:gIN9vFwfgNiqUXBlfA
