Share Linux files to and from wireless Windows computers

Hello, recently loaded Mint 19 onto an old 32-bit HP computer... wanting to experiment with Linux before deciding to load it onto my main Dell computer (currently running 64-bit Windows 8.1). All is going well with the Linux Operating System... I'm liking what I see. For reference, this installation is on a 20GB drive partition in format Ext4... it's NOT a dual boot on a single device... I wiped the whole hard disk and formatted it before loading Mint.
I'm stuck on one issue.. trying to share files from the newer Windows devices on my home network... through router: Asus RT-AC68U. All the computers including Linux connect well with the internet and with my wireless printer, but the Windows computers don't communicate locally with the Linux computer. Specifically, (on Linux) when I access Network", I see the Windows icon... click on it and get a screen suggesting I need a password. I've tried every password I've ever used on the Windows computer, the router, etc... and always get an unable to mount...... failed to retrieve share list from server". Yes, I've appropriately configured some folders in the Windows computers for sharing (and the Windows computers can share between themselves...the other computers are a Windows 8.1 and a Windows 10). From the Windows computers.. neither one displays the Linux device on their network maps.
From forum searches, I've confirmed that Samba is installed and running... did multiple checks and tried some configuration adjustments suggested on various forums. I'm wondering if there's something about the old 32-bit computer that needs attention so as to share with the 64-bit devices?
