The Detroit Red Wings signed veteran netminder Thomas Greiss to a two-year contract, the team announced Saturday.

Greiss' deal is worth $7.2 million, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The 34-year-old German has spent the previous five seasons with the New York Islanders and captured the Williams M. Jennings Trophy alongside Robin Lehner in 2018-19.

Greiss owned a 16-9-4 record with a .913 save percentage and 2.74 goals-against average over 31 appearances with the Islanders last season.

Detroit will likely run a platoon system with Greiss and Jonathan Bernier.
