The San Francisco 49ers replaced Jimmy Garoppolo with C.J. Beathard at halftime Sunday after the starter threw two interceptions against the Miami Dolphins in his first action since Week 2.

San Francisco trailed 30-7 after two quarters.

"You could tell he was affected by his ankle," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. "I know he doesn't normally throw the ball that way, and he was struggling because of it."

Garoppolo returned to the lineup after missing two games with an ankle injury and went 7-for-17 for 77 yards with the pair of picks. He was also sacked three times and fumbled once, though San Francisco recovered his loose ball.

The 28-year-old threw for 390 yards and four touchdowns over his first two games of the season. He tossed for 3,978 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season for the NFC champions.

San Francisco came into the contest looking to bounce back from a 25-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4. Instead, the 49ers fell 43-17 and saw their record drop to 2-3.

"You're either getting better or you're getting worse, and if we don't get better, it's going to be a long season," Shanahan said, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
