Kawann Short's shoulder injury will require season-ending surgery and the defensive tackle will be placed on the injured reserve, Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule announced Wednesday.

Short suffered the injury during last week's victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He'll end his second straight campaign on the injured reserve with shoulder issues, but this time it's the opposite shoulder of the one that knocked him out in 2019.

One year is left on the 31-year-old's contract at $12.5 million, though there's no guaranteed money remaining.

Short missed two games earlier in the year with a foot issue. He amassed six tackles across three starts in 2020.

Zach Kerr and rookies Derrick Brown and Bravvion Roy will likely receive the majority of snaps at defensive tackle in Short's absence moving forward.
