vim 8.2.1039: making words typed after column 79 not to introduce a newline (carriage return).

Hi: I am editing a text file under vim. When the last character typed reaches column 80 the whole word is automatically moved to the next line. I don't know the name for this behavior, so I can use neither google nor the built-in help. How do I eliminate this behavior?
