Can't arrange dual monitors with gnome.

Hi,

I'm running on a lenovo laptop and just tried switching to gnome from xfce, as it is the only supported desktop environment for Unity3d on linux. My problem is that after installing I have been unable to properly configure my dual monitors. It starts out with a funky configuration where the right monitor is arrived at through the upper right corner of the left monitor. I just want them side by side. When I try to do that using gnome's built in display(arrange combined displays), the screens go dark and when I reboot they haven't changed at all.

Distro: Xubuntu(Ubuntu 16.04 LTS)
Monitors: 1. HP LV2311 2. Acer P216HL
gnome-panel --version RETURNS gnome-panel 3.18.3
