Youtube video lag and stuttering on Firefox (Mint OS)

For a while now I have been experiencing major video performance issues when playing youtube videos on both of my computers running Linux Mint. Main machine is using a Nvidia GT1030 video card and the other one, an older nvidia GT440 card.

Both machines started having serious problems playing youtube videos about a year ago. I experience NONE of the issues with Windows 10. I also believe its getting worst every time I do a system update or browser update... Right now both machines are equipped with Firefox 82 and the nvidia driver 435.21.

Symptoms:

When starting a youtube video, it starts automatically at 1080p, then plays for a second, then the image will "freeze" but the sound will continue just fine. After 5 or 10 sec, the picture will be replaced by a blank window with a spinning wheel (see attached screenshot) and after a few seconds, the video will resume playback at a lower quality (usually 720p). This happens multiple times during playback.

If the above doesn't happen, the playback will be extremely choppy.

I notice very high CPU (all cores usually around 90%+). This machine uses an older AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU and 16GB Ram.

When the performance is not good, I found that "killing" a firefox process (using htop, usually the first one when sorted by CPU usage) will force firefox to resume playback at 720p.

BTW, not sure if this is normal, but there are at least 250 processes like these:

Code:/usr/lib/firefox/firefox -contentproc -childID 4 -isForBrowser -prefsLen 7092 -prefMapSize 238292 -parentBuildID 20201014125134 -appdir /usr/lib/firefox/browser 5657 true tabThe following parameters in about:config are set to "TRUE" so I believe the hardware acceleration is active:

Code:media.ffmpeg.vaapi-drm-display.enabled
media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabledFrom the nvidia control panel:
  • GeForce GT 1030
  • Total Memory:2048 MB
  • Total Dedicated Memory:1993 MB
  • Used Dedicated Memory:156 MB (8%)
I'm not sure how to fix this... Any clues? Every website I've found with similar issues, the recommendation was to activate hardware acceleration which is AFAIK active.
