Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence left the door slightly open for a return to the school next season, but head coach Dabo Swinney isn't holding his breath.

I mean, we'll certainly let him stay if that's what he wants to do. But I'd be surprised if he's back with the Tigers next year, but who knows? You never know. I didn't think Christian Wilkins was coming back, but he did," Swinney said, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Lawrence's remarks earlier this week led to some hope that he could come back for his senior year.

My mindset has been that I'm going to move on," Lawrence said. But who knows? There's a lot of things that could happen."

The talented passer, and likely No. 1 pick next spring if he departs for the NFL, was off to arguably his best start. However, Lawrence announced that he tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

Lawrence has completed 70% of his pass attempts for 1,833 yards. He's also limited his turnovers, throwing 17 touchdown passes and just two interceptions.

Lawrence guided Clemson to a national championship in 2018, and he received first-team All-ACC honors last season.

Clemson is averaging 48.2 points per game this campaign, and the Tigers will look to remain perfect with a win over Boston College this Saturday.
