Video Resolution - controller - monitor?

My Mint machine has an NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [NVS 300] (rev a2) controller.

I plan to get a nice new 27" IPS HP27f monitor with a max resolution of 1920 x 1080 and I don't want to just see a larger version of what I have now.

According to NVIDIA the controller is capabkle of Maximum Display Resolution (Digital @ 60Hz) 2560x1600 (DisplayPort) or 1920x1200 (DVI-I).
