Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to be activated from the injured reserve ahead of this week's game, head coach Matt Rhule said Friday, according to Steve Reed of The Associated Press.

McCaffrey is expected to play Sunday for the first time since injuring his ankle in Week 2.

The 24-year-old back has been the focal point of the Panthers' offense since entering the NFL in 2017. McCaffrey led the league with 2,392 yards from scrimmage last year and was named a first-team All-Pro.

Carolina has leaned on running back Mike Davis in McCaffrey's absence. Davis has recorded 594 yards from scrimmage in six starts this season.

McCaffrey could be much-needed relief for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, as he's thrown three interceptions over his last three contests.

The Panthers - who've lost three straight games - will look to get back on track Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Carolina also listed offensive tackle Russell Okung as doubtful for Sunday's game due to a calf issue while safety Jeremy Chinn is questionable due to a knee injury.
