Elilo on Dell laptop. No boot options shown.

Hi, elilo doesn't seem to display a "boot menu" where I can select my desired kernel. It seems to have the functionality because if I create another entry in the config file, and press the arrow keys on boot it DOES make a difference which kernel gets loaded. But there is just a blank screen on boot with a couple of dots as it times out. No manual pages for elilo(?) and the default config file has the bare minimum of options with no help. Did I miss something here?
