Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has a partially torn thumb ligament in his throwing hand, reports NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

The Lions will take the week to determine the veteran passer's availability for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, though he's expected to start.

X-rays on the thumb came back negative on Monday and cleared Stafford of a major injury, but further tests determined the tear.

Stafford has played through multiple injuries throughout his 12-year career. He suited up for all 16 games for eight consecutive years before he was limited to just eight last season due to a back injury.

Stafford played through the thumb ailment on Sunday and posted 276 passing yards and three touchdowns against the Washington Football Team.
