New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton admitted testing positive for COVID-19 in Week 4 led to a stagnant" feeling upon his return.

"Ever since coming back from corona, to be honest with you, I felt stagnant in my thought process," Newton said Thursday, according to NFL.com's Grant Gordon.

Newton and the Patriots had a 2-1 record before his positive test. The veteran passer racked up 714 yards through his first three contests, recording two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The 31-year-old struggled in his first start after he tested negative for COVID-19 in Week 6. Newton explained falling behind in Josh McDaniel's evolving offense was a bigger hurdle for him than recovering from the virus.

"When I did come back, I just felt behind. The production here of late is nothing to blame more or less than me just taking ownership and responsibility that I just have to be better."

New England has strung together consecutive wins following a four-game losing streak. Newton has four total touchdowns (one passing, three rushing) in both wins.

The Patriots (4-5) will attempt to extend their win streak to three games - and climb to .500 - when they take on the (2-7) Houston Texans.
