Dual screen - half working (Where to set desktop size ?)

I've got a PC with onboard graphics chip driving one screen, and a PCI-e graphics card driving a second screen. Screens are side by side, and I have the xfce4 desktop running under X11.
My mouse will happily glide from one screen to the other, but the desktop only works on one screen.
If I try to stretch a window across both screens, the window gets to the edge of the first screen, and then stops.
It seems to me that I have to somehow tell something my desktop is bigger than it thinks it is, but I cannot find what.
Any help appreciated.
