timing an audio file that mplayer can play

i have timed some audio by letting mplayer just play them, maybe cutting off the sound, and timing the command. but i would like a way to do it much faster. i know that raw and raw-like audio files can be figured based on file size. but other types need more smarts and perhaps reading most if the file. can mplayer be told to do this with one or more options? is there another program that can?
