Debian Buster sound issue: Works, and doesn't
by business_kid from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5BG3V)
This is a 6 marker.
I have a RazPi 4 With RPi OS (= Debian Buster armhf) in 32bit (OS Release) & 64bit(Beta) I've recently updated & upgraded them both. Audio out is via hdmi.
The 64bit Beta is fine - sound works as before. With the 32Bit (which has the hard disk) I lost sound after the upgrade. Perhaps this was because I kept doing messy file transfers (ssh & scp & disk copies) instead of rebooting. Anyhow, I am where I am.
I compared the 2 OSes and they seem identical. 'sudo lsmod |grep snd' seems the same. The one difference I found was that in vlc, clicking on Audio/Audio Device, I get a choice of Analogue, or digital. It was set on Analog, but Digital had the sound for vlc. That doesn't get back sound in anything else, just vlc. Chrome is still silent, and I've lost Analog sound. So digital is there, Analog is gone, and I've just messed up the sound on my x86 box temporarily checking that
