Five Hamilton sub sandwich shops for fast and easy take out

Here are five tried and true sandwich shops in the Hammer where you can takeout for about $5.
1. Fennell Submarines, 676 Fennell Ave. E., is a little takeout joint on Hamilton's east Mountain right near the corner of Fennell and Upper Sherman. Toss of lettuce, tomato and some cold meats for your basic mixed, or junk it any way you want. Hot tip, Monday and Tuesday special is $4.99 for a mixed sub. 2. McQueen's Banh Mi Viet, 103 Queen St. N. Who can get enough of these delicious and authentic Vietnamese sandwiches, a.k.a. Banh Mi? Order early, they sell out fast. Call to preorder for pick up. A basic sandwich is just $4.80. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., or until they sell out. 905-529-2999
2. Paradise Subs, 919 Upper Paradise Rd., can take on the big boys with simple fare and flare. On Hamilton's west Mountain at the busy corner of Upper Paradise and Stone Church Road, this community focused family run shop offers a 12-inch mixed for $3.99, or you can super sub it for $7.99. Open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Saturday (5 p.m. close on Saturday). 905-574-8468
4. Mike's Subs Hamilton's Original, 1104 Fennell St. E., or 122 Ottawa St. N. Either is an Original Hamilton Mike's Sub. It's been around for 55 years and we know why. Home to the submarine sandwich, it's simple and classic. A basic mixed sub runs $5.95. Open 10 a.m. to midnight, or 1 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 5. Zarky's Fine Foods, 264 Dundurn St. S. It's not just entrees at this Hamilton location. In the back, at the deli counter you can order up a sub to go. It's a little more expensive, most subs will run you $8.49. Current store hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and you can call ahead to order. 905-525-6664
