Compromised or just an old farts memory? Incorrect password on my desktop with Lubuntu installed.

It's been almost a year since I logged on to my desktop with Lubuntu installed. I regret, it's been so long, I can't furnish any of the technical information that might be more helpful. Although I've been a member for some time, I would still be considered a rank amateur. Is there a workaround for a lost password or do I reinstall and lose my documents?
