Ardour pulse audio

Ardour looks like it could be a fine audio editor except.....
i can't get any sound out of it.
Forums suggest learning how to connect to a Jack daemon. I am using Mint with Pulse Audio. some forums suggest that Jack should be unnecessary. Ardour should just work but so far I can get a tweet out of it. Part of the problem is the myriad of buttons and menus are apparently obvious to advice givers but sadly not me.
Can anyone please post a set of easy instructions on how to get sound out of this product and hopefully not using Jack.
