mutt email size is wrong

When I first open mutt, the email sizes are all wrong. For example, I just got a fairly short email. When I open mutt it says "( 10K)", but after I open and close that message it says "( 80)". Another went from "( 9.8K)" to "( 140)", so I don't see a pattern. This is not a huge problem - I was just hoping someone could tell me whether it's normal. It is mutt version 1.10.1 hooked up to my gmail.
