Comparing Linux Mint xfce vs Linux Lite

I watched a YouTube review in which LM20 and LT 5.2.6. was compared for resources used. I think this was Virtual-box review of each. When he checks the ram usage it was 4GB. for Lite lite and it was around 560 for Linux Mint. I installed Linux lite on my older evaluation desktop Lenovo m57e with 4GB the ram used was 555.
I would like to understand why ram usage would vary on different computers? My logic what is running in the background. one thing to note is the swap is not being used. I have LM20 xfce on a t420 with 8GB and it will use around 560+MB idle. why am I doing this I have a friend with a older desktop with low ram. I was looking into light weight Linux options that do not have an ugly interface.
