Problems after running apt upgrade with Buster

I had my Laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad P55) running on Debian for a few months, with mostly everything working, wifi, trackpad, bluetooth, even my dock, but yesterday I run "apt update and apt upgrade" as I normally do and now I have a huge list of problems and a little unsure how to resolve.

If I'm being honest, I only started using Debian a few months ago as I now use it at work so perhaps got a bit carried away with the old "apt", assuming that things wouldn't break so easily.

for reference I originally installed using the guide from here:

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/m...ion_v1.0.1.pdf

and the iso from:

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/u...64-netinst.iso

I believe as part of this update, the kernel image was also changed, maybe the root of the issue, but anyway, my problems are...
The laptop has a hybrid Intel gpu and also a discrete Nvidia gpu, I had previously had to download the drivers from Nvidia to get this working but since the "apt upgrade", even switching to the Intel one in the bios isn't helping. With the latter option selected, I can get to the graphical login screen but unable to login, after entering the correct credentials, screen goes blank and then returns to the login screen. I've tried this with different valid user accounts and different desktop environments.

I had previously added some kernel options to the grub.cfg file but now also see they are gone and this surprises me, surely an apt upgrade would preserve previous config files?

My wifi card is no longer working, trackpad etc etc. And while these can probably be resolved and I may be able to download the latest Nvidia driver, I don't understand why an apt upgrade could break a perfectly working system in the first place.

So mainly for the time being, I'd be interested in any comments of suggestions on how to resolve without doing a fresh install (I had some so much configuring, the thought of it makes me ill). I'm particularly interested in finding out how to resolve the login loop kind of thing that I am facing as mentioned above.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance of any suggestions.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=h0HN-YfidK4:t6ett3WLN6g:F7zBnMy latest?i=h0HN-YfidK4:t6ett3WLN6g:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=h0HN-YfidK4:t6ett3WLN6g:gIN9vFwh0HN-YfidK4
