AMDGPU Ryzen 5 on Debian 10

I set up the integrated GPU on an otherwise fresh install of Debian 10 + mate just by downloading/installing the firmware-amd-graphics Package. It was the only solution after i couldn't find any linux-related driver on the manufacturers support page as recommended here so scince it seemed to work i left it with that.
After a recent incident when a 3d-dependent game (based on and designed for linux) froze cold with no way around a hard-reset i started to worry. I think i can rule out that is in any way specially related with that application scince this never happened before under any other circumstances and the way it crashed (frozen frame with sound from background-apps still working but no way to switch to desktop/other ttys) strongly indicates issues with the GPU
Is there a possibility that i am harming the system with the current setup? Am i overseeing something crucial that should be taken in consideration?
