Upgrade to ubuntu 20.04 from ubuntu 18.04

I am running ubuntu 18.04 and lately when I click on the icon for software updates there is an option to upgrade to ubuntu 20.04. since I previously had trouble with 20.04 I am reluctant to try it. I had purchased dvds from 3 different sources which were supposed to contain the final and full version of 20.04. All 3 were missing so much they seemed like beta versions. When I downloaded programs from the ubuntu software folder they were incomplete and I had to search the internet or come here to try to locate the missing files to make them work and some of the previous programs I had installed stopped working. i got so disgusted I decided to stay with 18.04 but now I am curious if the upgrade option offered on 18.04 is any better. I am cautious because i read an article that claims if you upgrade some of your installed programs will stop working. I have used ubuntu since version 10,04 and never had so much trouble upgrading before.
