Bills allowed to have almost 6,800 fans at wild-card game

The Buffalo Bills will welcome back fans when hosting their first home playoff game in nearly 25 years.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the NFL team is allowed to have 6,772 spectators in Bills Stadium for the upcoming playoff game, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques.

New York commissioner of health Dr. Howard Zucker called it a "demonstration project" and said last week it's "a public health model that's never been done anywhere in the country before." The game could offer an example of how to hold mass gatherings that are open to the public.

Bills fans cheered from afar this season as spectators weren't allowed to attend home games based on New York's COVID-19 protocols. The team will work with the state's Department of Health to conduct contact tracing after the postseason contest.

Attendees have to test negative for COVID-19 to enter Bills Stadium. Once inside, fans must practice social distancing, and masks are required at all times. Failure to comply will result in an immediate ejection.
