RAM

hi,
When i configure VM on vmware i gave 1Gb RAM but i boot OS and
Code:free -mh
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 972MWhy i not have 1Gb as total memory?
/etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="crashkernel=auto
if i am required to provide a system with 1gm RAM it means that when i configure VM i must give more that 1Gb RAM.right?
