Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be available for Sunday's crucial game against the Buffalo Bills, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Tua Tagovailoa is not at risk of missing Miami's season finale after the NFL's contact tracing confirmed no other Dolphins players are high-risk close contacts, Pelissero adds.

Fitzpatrick led the Dolphins to victory in Week 16 after entering in relief of Tagovailoa. Head coach Brian Flores later said Tagovailoa would remain the starter, with Fitzpatrick only coming in if needed. With the veteran passer unavailable, Jake Rudock is expected to be the top backup.

Miami's game against the Bills carries heavy playoff implications: The Dolphins face a win-and-in scenario in their contest against the newly crowned AFC East champions.

The Dolphins can also clinch a playoff berth with a loss by the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, or Indianapolis Colts.

Fitzpatrick opened the season as Miami's starter, and his play - both as a starter and in relief - has been instrumental to the Dolphins' success this year.

The 38-year-old passer has compiled a 4-3 record in 2020, while Tagovailoa is 6-2 in his rookie year.
