Man in ‘serious but stable condition’ after car fell 30 metres over escarpment at Sherman Cut
A 46-year-old man was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition" after his car went over the escarpment off the Sherman Cut on the Mountain on Thursday morning.
The man, the sole occupant of the vehicle, suffered multiple traumatic injuries, said Supt. Dave Thompson of the Hamilton Paramedic Service.
He was transported to a local trauma centre ... and was speaking with paramedics throughout the transport," he said.
Thompson said paramedics were called to the scene just after 7:40 a.m. on Dec. 31.
The patient, he said, had significant injuries to multiple parts of his body that we would expect with a motor-vehicle collision of that sort."
From what I understand, there was a lot of damage to the vehicle," Thompson said. The gentleman's quite lucky."
In an email to The Spectator, Hamilton fire assistant deputy chief Shawn De Jager said crews were called to the Sherman Cut for a possible car gone over the escarpment" shortly before 8 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews located the vehicle 30 metres down. De Jager said the lone occupant of the vehicle sustained multiple injuries.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., crews were attempting to extract" the occupant from the vehicle. By 10 a.m., the man had been removed from the vehicle and was with paramedics.
Firefighters could be seen carrying a person up shortly before 10 a.m.
Hamilton police and paramedics are also on scene.
Upbound and downbound lanes on the west leg and the upbound lane on the east leg of Sherman Access are closed.
Police say an investigation into the single-vehicle collision is ongoing.
