Sam Darnold hasn't flourished in the NFL yet after nearly three seasons, but the New York Jets quarterback remains optimistic that his best football is in front of him.

"I absolutely believe my best days are ahead," Darnold said Thursday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.

Darnold hasn't produced a breakout campaign since entering the league as the third overall pick in 2018.

His struggles are generating rumors regarding Darnold's future with the Jets, who can pick up the fifth-year option on the signal-caller's rookie deal this offseason. He's slated to become a free agent after the 2021 campaign.

New York also could target the quarterback position with the second overall pick in the 2021 draft.

"I'm a Jet now," Darnold added. "I know we all like to think of hypotheticals and what-ifs, but I'm a Jet right now. I love being here. I love the guys in the locker room. I love going to work every single day here."

Darnold has completed 58.8% of his pass attempts for 1,942 yards and eight touchdowns against nine interceptions through 11 games this season while posting a 2-11 record.

The 23-year-old is averaging 3,386 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions with a completion percentage of 59.6 per 16 games played throughout his career.
