Any tips for transferring lots of files from my Android phone to my Linux Mint PC?

I know I'm supposed to do my own research before posting questions here, but I just get sick of finding info that doesn't quite line up with my issue, forcing me to cherry-pick and reinterpret article after article. I'd rather just talk to real people.
That being said, my phone's drives are nearly at capacity. That includes the SD card I installed. I'm getting a new phone but I still have to deal with the files on my current phone.
I plan on deleting some files and organizing the rest but it would be much easier to do on my desktop. My current phone is running very poorly due to being over filled and not having great specs.
I need to transfer about 43GB, made up mostly of images, GIFs and short videos I've downloaded. As well as a few PDFs and other assorted files. We're talking about hundreds, maybe thousands, of small files.
I've tried transferring these files over before. It was a while ago now. I think I tried a few things that just didn't work. I remember having trouble getting my phone to connect in the first place, having issues with corrupted files, transfers not completing, etc.
Eventually I tried using built-in software called Pix to transfer photos. I worked better than my previous attempts but I could only transfer photos and GIFs and I didn't have as much control over where the files ended up as I would have liked. I'll be more than willing to read any sort of manual to Pix if y'all think that app is my best option.
What is the best way to do this?
Is there anything I should know about transferring files from Android 6.0.1 to Linux Mint 19.3?
Should I try Bluetooth or stick to USB? Maybe another transfer method?
Should I try to compress the files? ZIP?
How do I avoid transfer errors and file corruption?
I've had trouble in the past accessing folders with a high quantity of files. It takes a very long time to open such folders. How can I prevent this in the future? By upgrading the hardware of my PC? What hardware might affect this? Is it possible to send files such that they only make a folder so large and then create a new folder automatically?
What's the best way to verify that my files transferred successfully before deleting them off my phone?
Is there any software that will make organizing the files easier once they're transferred? (might make a separate thread about this)
Is there anything I should consider that I haven't already?
Thanks in advance, I know these are a lot of questions. I'll owe you one if you help me out.
